I Let My 7-Year-Old Nephew Choose Which Candidate I Voted For In The 2019 Elections

Recently, the election results were declared and our nation elected BJP led NDA to form their government. This does not necessarily mean that BJP has won and INC has lost. We need to look at the bigger picture. I don’t think elections are a competition where a winner emerges. But our leaders think they are playing a game. Perhaps, they are playing it like a game which seems to be more fun than PUBG. Whether we consider demonetisation or rolling out GST, I don’t believe the country was ready for either scheme. But the nation has chosen the same government once again. I would say, someone had to be chosen. Hence it was them.

In my opinion, choosing the Modi government over any other is similar to following the notion ‘best out of waste’. Modi is not a bad leader. Neither is he a good leader. But we did not have an alternative.

I have a 7-year-old nephew. I took him to the polling booth with me when I went to vote and outside the room, I asked him to pick any candidate from the chart displayed. He picked a candidate not from INC/AAP/BJP but from a party I had never heard of. We voted for that candidate. When I was looking at the results, I could not even see how many votes that candidate had received as his name must have been mixed with others in the miscellaneous category.

After returning from the polling booth, initially, I thought what I did was irresponsible. But later I realized, instead of selecting NOTA, I brought a smile to my nephew’s face as he felt heard. But I think, he should know that once he grows up and has an opinion to put forth before the government, he may not be heard. Especially if this country remains the same over the next few decades.

A change can only be brought about if we change our mindsets and start believing that everyone in the country should win in the elections and no one should lose. The people should vote for someone good for them and not the best out of the ‘not-so-good’ ones. Why can we not effectively exercise NOTA?

Why were we forced to choose a leader when the contestants were not competent enough? Why did we choose a leader who was biased to his home state? Why did we choose a leader who spent crores of rupees on a statue of someone from the past when he could have fed hundreds of villages for years with that money?

If not Modi, who else? I’m not saying I support INC or any other party. I support my country and my countrymen. I don’t want a winner in my leader. I want the leader to make the entire team win. I want India to win.
