August, 1947. Radcliffe’s Line divided India into two parts- India and Pakistan. Since then, both nations have had very tensed relations, which have ensued wars and regular border skirmishes, except the times, when our leaders tried to initiate peace talks by gate crashing Pakistani Prime Minister’s daughter’s wedding or opening Kartarpur Sahib corridor, but to no avail. We share a very interesting love-hate relationship with our neighbour, where the word love is mostly silent and absent during election campaigning.

But like good Samaritans, no matter how much we hate Pakistan, we never shy away from actively promoting its tourism and citizenship. Pakistani Tourism and Citizenship Persuasion scheme was propounded and popularised by our competent politicians, later it trickled down to our conscious citizens. This scheme is instantly applicable to uncomfortable societal truths and difficult questions. ‘Whataboutery’ used to be last resort of indefensible, ‘Go to Pakistan’ has certainly replaced that, and how!

This has become ‘the general response to every tough question’. The tougher the question, the longer the trip is advised to be. Initially, due to compulsions of minority appeasement, scheme was only restricted to Muslims, but recently Government, in accordance to it’s motto of Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas, has included intellectuals, ‘urban- naxals’ and ‘anti-nationals’ under the purview of this scheme.

Competent media channels have been tasked with investigating and filing charges against potential tourists. After meticulously investigating an incident, media has to conduct a media trial by filing a charge sheet in people’s court. Charge sheet must be aided with chest thumping jingoistic rhetorics and doctored videos. Guilty or not, nationalist fringe groups would anyway volunteer and contribute for your trip to Pakistan. This scheme has expanded to various other countries. China and Saudi Arabia are recent additions. New counties are expected to join this fray soon.

Anti-National and Urban-Naxal Certificates Distribution Kendras have been set up, which issue certificates to whoever they deem worthy. These certificates may come in handy in encouraging people to lynch you. WhatsApp University educates people about the certificate holders, which encourages people in organising a mob of fringe storm troopers to lynch them. Irony is, it is the Indian nationalists and politicians who’re at the forefront in promoting tourism to Pakistan. Day in and day out, they tell dissenters to spend some time in Pakistan, even encouraging them to seek a permanent citizenship.

But on a closer look, one may notice that the problem isn’t about Pakistan or any other country. Problem is all about questions. Questions, that embarrass the persons in power, take away sheen from their lofty claims of good governance. Questions, that don’t let them sleep and expose their sheer hypocrisy. Questions, that instill faith in our democracy. Questions, that we, as citizens are entitled to ask, and they, as elected representatives are bound to respond to.

Questioning the opposition is easy, but questioning the person in power is necessary. Our vote gives us the right to question, and we should question and criticize our elected representative in a constructive manner without the fear of getting labeled as traitors or urban-naxals or anti-nationals, or being granted a free trip to Pakistan.

The tactic of labeling people with these labels is being played out to evade and avoid questions by undermining their personal credibility and ridiculing them.

Questioning and dissenting is not terrorism.
