With the election around the corner, every political party is gearing up for this mega show of strength. Lok Sabha election in India is the biggest democratic process in the world. This time the election is very crucial to all the parties as it is against PM Narendra Modi-led BJP government. The Aam Admi Party the ruling political party of Delhi is indeed a very important part of this election.
The party has chosen to fight the election with the issue of demanding full statehood for Delhi. However, in this election, I believe the party’s biggest strength would be Delhi government’s educational reforms.
Whatever the political pundits say about Mandir-Masjid issues of the recent right-wing political environment, the people at the end see their own good. Delhi being the capital of the country has a huge population which is cosmopolitan and much plural. Delhi has nearly 12 % of the Muslim population who are majorly dependent on state education.
At the same time, in Delhi, the population of Dalits and people who stay in unauthorised colonies are high. The AAP government’s work for education has brought direct benefit to this population and this will help the party to gain support in the coming election.
In the last election itself, there was a shift in Muslim and Dalit votes towards the AAP from Congress, the party which ruled Delhi earlier. The Muslim and Dalits votes were a strong base for the Congress but now it has shifted to the AAP.
In Delhi, if you visit any unauthorised colony you will hear the stories of development in the education sector. I also believe that AAP should not have made the full statehood as the major issue; their work on education and health should have been the major focus. However, the party might think that the only way to overcome the obstructions from the Center is through attaining full statehood.
The specialty of AAP is that in today’s Indian politics where communalism, religion, cow and army are the main issues of politics, the party kept its focus on real development. You can agree or disagree with the politics of AAP but to be in power the main focus should be work for the common public’s welfare – which the party has done in various sectors.
The party came to power with the promises of changing the power sector and the water sector. The AAP government achieved those promises and along with that they performed their best in the education and health sector as well.
For the third consecutive year, the AAP kept its education budget 26% which is the highest in the country. These developments will indeed work for the party to win the coming Lok Sabha election in Delhi.
